Henry Louis Gates, a Harvard University professor, was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after being detained for breaking into his own home. A neighbor had called the police after seeing two men trying to force open the front door. When police arrived, Gates refused to speak outside and accused the officer of racism. Gates continued yelling even after being warned, so the officer arrested him. Gates resisted arrest but was handcuffed by another officer.
