What is Guinea Pigs in Scurvy and PKU Research about?
Guinea pigs were successfully used as a model organism by Holst and Frolisch in 1907 to study scurvy. They caused scurvy in guinea pigs by feeding them a grain-only diet and cured it by adding fresh cabbage and lemon juice. Guinea pigs were particularly useful for studying scurvy because they are one of the few mammals capable of displaying scurvy-like symptoms. The guinea pig model allowed for a systematic study of all the factors that cause and prevent scurvy.
