Golden rice is a genetically modified crop designed to increase dietary vitamin A levels and address vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. It was engineered by inserting genes from daffodil and bacteria into rice endosperm to allow it to produce beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Golden rice contains 1.6-2.0g of beta-carotene per gram of dry rice. There is no evidence that GM foods are dangerous, though some have been found to be allergenic.
