Based on the results of classical statistical mechanics of rock mass, to account for the randomness of the geological discontinuities, this paper attempts to introduce the principles of probability mechanics in the formulation of the behaviour of discrete media including structural effects into rock mechanics to form a new method of stochastic calculation of mechanical response of rock mass. First, the two measuring scales of rock mass, namely microelement and mesodomain are proposed; Second, the formulation of random deformation kinematics of microelement is derived, and the relations between random deformation and random stress of two measuring scales of rock mass are developed; Third, a calculating stochastic method is applied to an example problem for illustration of the proposed method.
