What is Health challenges among women tobacco farm laborers, Mysore, India about?

Purpose: Women in tobacco farming in India face occupational and maternity risks. We qualitatively explored health challenges of women tobacco farm labors, including maternity support, or lack thereof. Methods: We conducted five focus group discussions with 34 women tobacco farm laborers in Mysore District, India. Codes and themes were generated based on socioecological model (SEM) using ATLAS.ti 22 software. # Equal co-first authors Results: Participants conducted all tobacco farming activities: sowing, harvesting, sorting, and packing. Based on SEM levels, at the individual level, participants considered their health to be good, but most reported green tobacco sickness symptoms (e.g., headache, back pain, gastric problems, weakness, and allergy) during menstruation, pre natal, and post natal period. Men have more access to personal protective equipment than women. Participants believe tobacco use can cause cancer but working with it will not cause any harm. During their pregnancies and post natal period, participants received interpersonal (family and neighbors) and community support (health workers, nurses and doctors).
