Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher, novelist, and playwright who was the leading exponent of existentialism in the 20th century. He declined the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964. He grew up in Paris and was educated at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure. There he met Simone de Beauvoir, who became his lifelong partner.
