Pomegranates were believed to have sprung from the blood of Dionysus, violets from the blood of Attis and anemones from the blood of Adonis. The surreal flowers of Eleusis were created from the blood of mutilated deities and seeded the concepts of the mysteries. The toxic fruits of related flowers were possibly used in sacramental potions that prefigured the Eucharist in rituals that were seen by later ages as satanic.
