What is The Case for Workers' Cooperatives about?

For John Stuart Mill co-operative production ranked alongside the emancipation of women, as "one of the two great changes which will regenerate society". Sidney and Beatrice Webb adopted the extreme opposite that the whole project was bound to fail. The great economist Alfred Marshall took a third position. He acknowledged that the experience of workers' co-ops was not altogether convincing. But he argued that this was not because such venture weres doomed but because only wrong-headed and broken-backed versions of them had been tried. Given the genuine article, or so he asserted, and success would be assured. First published in 1978, "The Case for Workers' Co-ops'" is still the only study which brings together evidence about the actual record of those businesses from all over the world. What verdict does this evidence support? The short answer is that the evidence supports the "qualified" optimism of Marshall. Heavy emphasis must be put on conditions necessary for success.
