Elephant toothpaste is a foamy substance created by the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using a catalyst like potassium iodide or yeast. The reaction produces water and oxygen gas, which forms foam as the oxygen is trapped by soapy water. The process is exothermic, generating heat and resulting in a hot foam that can reach temperatures of about 75 °C.
