The aim of this study was to investigate the formation and the variation of the "black hole" (BH) phenomenon observed from porcine whole blood under well-controlled flow conditions. Methods: A GE LOGIQ 700 Expert with a linear M12L (13-MHz) transducer was used to obtain B-mode images from porcine whole blood in a mock flow loop with a diameter of 0.95 cm. A 10-MHz pulsed Doppler system was also used to observe the variation of the phenomenon over a cycle. Flow speed, mean steady flow, stroke rate (20 -60 beats/min), and hematocrit (12-46%) were the parameters for this study, and flow conditions were controlled by two reservoirs and two pumps (one for piston pump and the other for peristaltic pump) in a mock flow loop to generate steady, pulsatile, and oscillatory flow. Results: The BH, the appearance of a central hypoechoic zone surrounded by a bright hyperechoic zone, was formed asymmetrically at a half of the upper radial position under steady flow when a very slow flow was generated after a stoppage of the flow.
