Using the two-dimensional photoelastic technique the nature ofthe stress field in asimplified plane model ofa growing bainitic ferrite particle has been analyzed. The stress field, in areal case resulting from the volume expansion due to the y > a transformation, exhibits significant variations especially along the interface. Possible implications for the bainite transformation mechanism are discussed.
