Maralinga was chosen as a site for British nuclear testing in Australia in the 1950s due to its remote and sparsely populated location. The British conducted three test series - Operations Buffalo, Antler, and Totem - which involved both atmospheric and ground-based nuclear detonations. Both the British and Australian governments kept the testing largely secret and downplayed health risks to avoid opposition.
