Design of a Control System for a Flexible Manufacturing Cell by A. Costa; M. Garetti is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Design of a Control System for a Flexible Manufacturing Cell about?

A manufacturing cell control system (MCCS) is proposed for a small (4 to 6 machines)job shop production flexible manufacturing cell. The aim of MCCS is to solve the technological and scheduling problems of manufacturing in systems having a scarcely predictable and turbulent mix of products. The activities of MCCS are divided in two logical parts: (1) a manufacturing development subsystem devoted essentially to technological problems (process planning, operation sequencing, tooling, routing), and (2)a manufacturing management subsystem devoted to management activities (planning, scheduling, operative control of the system). After a brief description of the design concepts of MCCS, the manufacturing development subsystem will be described with some detail in this paper. In particular, a formal system of piece manufacturing specifications (PMS), capable of being largely computer aided is presented. Furthermore, a high-level cell programming language (CPL) is proposed to translate the PMS operation sequence into working activities within the cell. An example of the use of PMS and CPL for a cover-like piece is presented.
