Gustavo Eiffel was a French civil engineer born in 1832 who is most famous for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which was the tallest man-made structure in the world at the time of its completion in 1889. Some of his other notable achievements include designing the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor and the Maria Pia bridge in Portugal. He was born in Dijon, France to parents who worked as merchants.
