What is Understanding Significant Wave Height about?
Significant wave height (SWH) is a measure of the average height of the highest one-third of waves in a wave spectrum. It is traditionally defined as the mean height from trough to crest of the highest third of waves and is represented by Hs or H1/3. Now it is usually defined as four times the standard deviation of the surface elevation, represented by Hm0. SWH provides an important statistical description of ocean wave heights and is used in weather forecasts to indicate expected sea conditions.
