This document describes the synthesis of 1-phenylazo-2-naphthol, commonly known as Sudan I, through a two-step reaction of diazotization and azo coupling. In the first step, aniline was treated with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid to form a phenyldiazonium chloride solution. In the second step, this solution was added to a basic β-naphthol solution to yield Sudan I. An experimental yield of 55.2% Sudan I was obtained with a melting range of 80-84°C.
