The skin consists of two main layers - the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is made up of stratified squamous epithelium, including the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and stratum corneum. Keratinocytes in the epidermis produce keratin and undergo a process of maturation as they move upwards. Melanocytes in the epidermis produce the pigment melanin. The dermis lies below the epidermis and contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and sebaceous and sweat glands.
