This case study describes how prefabricated vertical drains called Colbonddrain CX1000 were used to consolidate and stabilize soft soils in Istanbul, Turkey in preparation for the Marmaray rail project connecting Europe and Asia under the Bosphorus. Over 500,000 linear meters of CX1000 drains were installed in a 1.2 meter grid to a depth of 15 meters on average, allowing soil settlement of 0.9 meters within 6 months instead of years, and enabling early construction.
