What is Optically Active Vinyl Polymers Containing Fluorescent Groups, 3 Synthesis and Characterization of Optically Active Polymers Containing Carbazolyl Groups about?

## Abstract Syntheses and characterizations of polymers from the optically active vinylcarbazole derivatives (__S__)‐3‐__sec__‐butyl‐9‐vinylcarbazole (**1**), (__S__)‐9‐(2‐methylbutyl)‐2‐vinylcarbazole (**2**), and (__S__‐9‐(2‐methylbutyl)‐3‐vinyl‐carbazole)(**3**) are described in detail. The __N__‐vinyl derivative **1** gives satisfactory conversions to high polymers in the presence of both radical and cationic initiators whereas the __C__‐vinyl derivatives **2** and **3** give better results with ionic initiators (anionic and cationic respectively). Measurement of optical rotation and circular dichroism (CD) for all the polymers as well as corresponding monomers and low molecular weight analogs indicates that the stereochemical placements of monomeric units in the macromolecules are dependent on the type of initiators used.
