The ovule is the structure in seed plants where female reproductive cells are produced and contained. It is located inside the ovary and consists of an outer protective integument layer, an inner nucellus tissue, and a female gametophyte called the embryo sac at its center. After fertilization, the ovule develops into a seed containing an embryo that can grow into a new plant. Ovules come in different shapes and the number and location of ovules varies between gymnosperms and angiosperms.
