BACKGROUND TO THE NOVEL Nelle Harper Lee was born on 26 April 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama, which is most certainly the Maycomb of the novel. She was the youngest daughter of a lawyer and began to write early in childhood while she was attending local schools. Her satirical presentation of education in the novel suggests that she found much to criticise there.Harper Lee studied law at the State University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, spending a year as an exchange student at Oxford University, but left six months before the final exams to settle in New York. Here she worked for a time as an airline reservations clerk. Encouraged by an agent to whom she sent her work, she gave up her job to write full time and after substantial revision, To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, three years after its first submission to a publisher. It was immediately acclaimed and became a bestseller, translated into many languages. The novel won three literary awards, one of which was the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
