What is Plant Response to Industrial Waste about?
Rapid industrialization has badly loaded the environment with the variety of organic and inorganic pollutants which has raised the concern about interaction of industrial waste with the plants. Improper disposal of industrial waste in agricultural soils and water bodies has threatened the soil and environmental health, as well as food quality and quantity. Plants are in continues interaction with air, water and soil. Heavy metals and nanoparticles from the affected soils or via irrigation enter plant roots and contaminate the food chain as well. However, plants are gifted with defense system, traits and mechanics controlled by genetics to survive and adapt the deleterious effects of environmental pollutants. Plants have different nonenzymatic and enzymatic antioxidative mechanisms to counteract the oxidative stress. The present chapter provides a systematic overview of plant’s growth, physiological, and biochemical responses to industrial waste.
