This dissertation presents work on using the AdS/CFT correspondence to study the relationship between type IIB superstring theory on AdS5 × S 5 and N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The author develops a "curvature expansion" of AdS5 × S 5 that allows calculating string energies beyond the free pp-wave limit.
