"John Newbery was the London bookseller who pioneered publishing for children as a serious part of the book trade. The principal American award for children's literature is named, in his memory, the Newbery Medal. His most famous title, Little Goody Two-Shoes, is still remembered, though not read." "He was a farm boy who came to London and made good. He was the friend and sometimes the employer of Dr Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith, and Christopher Smart (who became his son-in-law.) His little books for children, which sold in their thousands, were only part of a large and varied publishing output. He was a business man to his finger-tips, always on the look-out for profitable new enterprises; and he made most of his fortune from promoting patent medicines, most notably the once-famous Dr James's Fever Powder. Yet contemporaries praised his honesty and benevolence, and John Newbery was in his way a man of the Enlightenment, concerned to educate the rising middle class to which he belonged.
