What is Size- and Temperature-dependent Mechanical Properties of Metallic Lithium about?
Lithium (Li) metal anodes are under active investigation to boost the energy density of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In developing such anodes, uncontrolled Li plating/stripping remains a critical issue, which calls for a deep understanding of the deformation characteristics of Li. Here we report an experimental study on the elastic, plastic, and creep behavior of metallic Li over a wide range of temperatures and length scales that are relevant to battery applications. We characterized these mechanical properties via environmentally controlled, variable-temperature nanoindentation. A strong size effect on the indentation hardness of Li was observed and rationalized by a modified Nix–Gao model incorporating the effect of surface energy. Size- and temperature-dependent creep behavior of Li was also analyzed and attributed to self-diffusion-controlled dislocation climb as the dominant creep mechanism.
