This circular provides interim guidance that the automatic operational mode of bridge navigational watch alarm systems (BNWAS) should not be used. This follows concerns raised at an IMO meeting that the automatic mode is not compatible with SOLAS requirements. Ship owners and operators are instructed to ensure masters are aware of this and the automatic mode should not be activated. This interim measure will apply until performance standards for BNWAS are revised.
