This slim volume on the important contributions of African Americans in the Revolutionary era and early republic notably narrates the rise of abolitionism in New England. Though most historians note the rise of the Abolitionist movement from the 1820s, the author argues effectively that African Americans articulated their own notions of freedom and plans for liberation decades before then. Relying on several published primary sources and a handful of important archival sources, Christopher Cameron makes a meaningful contribution to the study of antislavery movements and also the activism of free black communities during the Revolutionary period. Cameron successfully moves the chronology of antislavery activism in Massachusetts while also illuminating the role of black groups, such as the African Masonic Lodge, and the rise of black leaders, such as Prince Hall. Although Cameron's discussion and description of black communities in Massachusetts in the Revolutionary period finds solid ground in the second half of the book, the first detracts from the second tenant of his argument that these black activists articulated Calvinism into their doctrines and ideologies, thus connecting the
