What is MARPOL Annex VI Revisions Overview about?

The MEPC 57 meeting reached an agreement to amend MARPOL Annex VI regarding sulfur oxide emissions. The amendments lower the allowable sulfur content in marine fuels globally and in Emission Control Areas. They also require modifications to certain ship engines to meet Tier I NOx limits, certification of abatement technologies, improved reception facilities, and fuel verification procedures. The amendments will take effect in 2010 pending formal adoption in 2008.
