What is Doctor Marigold about?

The narrator and protagonist of this story, called Doctor in homage to the doctor who helped him be born, makes his living as a traveling salesman. The son of peddlers and extremely proud of his profession, Doctor Marigold tells us the most important events of his life, among which his meeting with Sophy, a deaf-mute girl, whom he adopts and whose education he will have to use all his strength, stands out especially ingenuity. In addition to the undoubted literary value that the story has in itself, it is also interesting because of what its protagonist reflects on the author himself. As Peter Ackroyd points out in his biography of the English writer, "the most surprising thing is that Dickens allowed so much of himself to be seen in the character of that peddler, as if, at that precise moment in his life, he felt closer to that peddler that of no one"
