What is Elastomer Interphase in Particle Filled Polypropylene; Structure, Formation and Mechanical Characteristics about?

It has been shown that important macroscopic characteristics of multicomponent polypropylene (PP) composites are extremely dependent on the amount, location, structure and quality of their elastomer component. Besides the composition of the system, the porportions of the elastomer, as separately dispersed droplets in the matrix and as a coating layer around filler particles as well as the thickness of the coating layer, are decisive for the stiffness, strength and toughness values. Toughness of the systems being studied at temperatures below the T g of PP and exposed to a high rate of deformation is primarily influenced by the amount and structure of the elastomer in the coating layer around the filler particles. At temperatures over the Tg, however, the amount of elastomer present in the separately dispersed droplets is the most effective parameter effecting the macroscopic characteristics. The above different correlation functions -below and beyond the T g -are most probably due to different mechanisms of deformation. Knowledge of the structure and properties relationships of the composites enables their "tailoring" to meet all kinds of consumers' demands.
