Vulnerability to mineral supply interruption is not as great a threat to Western Countries (and Japan) as is feared. Hanns W. Maull examines the position of a wide range of fuel minerals (oil, gas, coal, uranium) and non-fuel minerals (metals, fertilizers), details the supply situation and future availability, defines their criticality for Western societies, and suggests measures that can be taken now to mitigate the effects of severe supply interruptions. Measures include: co-operative arrangements and purely national or industrial insurance policies such as stockpiling; the sharing and spreading of shortages; increasing the flexibility of mineral infrastructures; and political initiatives to reduce the likelihood of catastrophic or widespread producer uncertainty.
