What is Low-Temperature Carburizing of Mild Steel about?
This study investigates the surface hardening of mild steel through pack carburizing at 450°C for 24 hours using coal paste with lime as an energizer. Results showed a modest hardness increase from 35.8 HRD at the core to 40.0 HRD at the surface, with limited carbon diffusion and no martensitic transformation due to the low temperature. The findings indicate that conventional carburizing at higher temperatures (850-950°C) is necessary for effective case hardening.
