Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) owned and operated a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. On December 2, 1984, over 40 tons of toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the plant, exposing over 600,000 people. At least 25,000 died and many more suffered long-term health issues. While Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) owned most of UCIL and its plant, survivors argued both companies were responsible. UCC paid $470 million in compensation but denied further liability.
