Purpose/Objective(s): The optimal treatment for hypopharyngeal cancer is still controversial. Our institution's policy for treating T1-2 hypopharyngeal cancer is to attempt to preserve function by definitive radiotherapy. For extensive nodal disease, planned neck dissection precedes radical radiotherapy to improve regional control. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the outcome of our treatment approach. Materials/Methods: A total of 75 patients with T1-2N0-3 hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were treated with radical radiotherapy between March 2000 and December 2006 at our institution. There were 71 males and 4 females, their ages ranging from 45 to 78 years (median, 61 years). The overall stage was as follows: Stage I, 9; Stage II, 25; Stage III, 4; Stage IVA, 32; and Stage IVB, 5. The primary tumor localization was the pyriform sinus in 65 patients and the posterior pharyngeal wall in 10 patients. Twenty patients (27%) had neck dissections prior to radiotherapy.
