What is The Burning Glass. about?
The re-issue of Marjorie Bowen's Patriotic Lady, the story of Emma Hamilton, was received with such enthusiasm that we now present The Burning Glass. This is a story of high life in the Paris of the Eighteenth Century, based on the diaries and memoirs of Mlle. Jule de Lespinasse. Unlike some of the famous salons of history, that of Mlle. de Lespinasse was intellectual. On six days a week, led by the Mathematician and Philosopher, D'Alembert, the most brilliant and liberal minds in Paris met. From these meetings came the Great Encyclopaedia, which preached an equivalent of "Make Love, not War." These people were inspired by Voltaire, Rousseau and the Englishman Locke. Julie de Lespinasse, who took opium where we might take a tranquilizer, was a woman of great sexual attraction, and Miss Bowen tells of her rather involved love-life with a most human sympathy. The days before the Revolution, of which the people in this book were surely forerunners, come to life from Miss Bowen's pen, and the end is much more harrowing than that in La Dame aux Camelias. This book shows once again how well Miss Bowen wrote, and how well she bears re-reading by any person of any age.
