What is Credit Growth about?
This study examines the relationship between credit and economic growth using new data from 46 economies between 1990 and 2011. It distinguishes the effects of credit stocks versus flows, and the effects of different types of credit (nonfinancial business/consumption credit versus financial/real estate credit). The results suggest that higher credit stocks do not necessarily support growth and may even have a negative impact. Meanwhile, growth in nonfinancial credit has a stronger positive effect on growth
