Piping passing through cargo tanks and ballast tanks must meet certain requirements to prevent oil pollution. Pipes must be made of heavy gauge steel with a minimum wall thickness depending on pipe diameter. Only expansion bends, not glands, are allowed in these lines within cargo and ballast tanks. Emergency discharge connections between cargo and ballast lines are only permitted for emergency use with valves and notices to prevent oil passage.
