The first two volumes covered the historical narrative, while the third volume concerned the flora, fauna, geography, and economic development of the state. The two historical volumes were combined into a single volume in the revised, two volume edition, published in 1812. That edition included additions and corrections by Belknap. Finally, in 1831 an update of the 1812 edition was made with extensive biographical and other notations by the well-known New England antiquarian and genealogist, John Farmer.
