A sinkhole is a surface depression that forms from the subsurface collapse of soil and rock into voids within soluble bedrock, most commonly limestone, dolomite, or gypsum (Gutiérrez et al., 2014). This process, a hallmark of karst topography, occurs over two stages: 1) the slow chemical dissolution of bedrock by slightly acidic groundwater, creating caverns, and 2) the mechanical downward migration of the overlying soil cover (raveling), which eventually leads to a sudden collapse.
