The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy that is estimated to be 26.8 kiloparsecs in diameter and contain between 100-400 billion stars. It has a bulge at the center and spiral arms that contain gas and dust. At the center is a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. The Milky Way rotates at approximately 220 km/s, and its rotational period is about 212 million years. It is moving at around 600 km/s relative to other galaxies. The oldest stars in the Milky Way are nearly as old as the Universe.
