## One Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) In early 1923, Adolf Hitler decided that he needed an elite bodyguard of men for his personal protection. Originally it consisted of just eight men and came under the command of one Julius Schreck, who had been a member of the Nazi Party since its formation, and became a close friend, con dant and devotee of Adolf Hitler, to such an extent that he even had the same style of moustache -no wider than the width of his nostrils. On 4 April 1925, Schreck became the rst leader of the newly formed Schutzstaffel or 'Protection Squadron; SS'. Prior to this the organisation had names such as Sturmabteilung, 'Storm Detachment; SA'; Stabswache, 'Staff Guard'; Stosstrupp-Hitler, 'Shock Troop-Hitler'; Schutzkommando, 'Protection Command'; and Sturmstaffel, 'Storm Squadron'. To be readily distinguishable from other units the Schutzstaffel took to wearing Armanen runes, in the form of two italic 'S's' on the collars of their uniforms, as well as a skull insignia as its cap badge.
