Joachim Raf was a prolific 19th century German composer born in 1822 who produced over 200 works. His Octet in C Major from 1872 is scored for string quartet plus two additional violins and violas. It consists of four movements - an opening Allegro movement establishing thematic material, an energetic second movement contrasting two themes, a melancholy Andante moderato slow movement, and a spirited finale contrasting lively and contemplative melodic material.
