What is Cystic Adenomatoid Malformation Of The Lung about?
The subject was introduced into the American literature in 1925 by Koontz. 2 There have been many classifications and designations for the disease since then which best exemplify the confusion which still engulfs the subject. Stowens 3 lists five types of congenital cystic disease of the lung which are not always easily differentiated: (1) microscopic cysts with failure of alveolar differentiation and compensatory overgrowth of the bronchial component of the lung, (2) congenital cystic bronchiectasis, (3) cystic enlargement of the alveoli, (4) adenomatoid or hamartomatous masses of tissue comprising most of the lung parenchyma with only occasional cysts, and ( 5) cystic pulmonary lymphangiectasis. In the last group, the dilated lymphatics are found scattered throughout the parenchyma, not specifically replacing a lobe or lobule as does the cystic disease of the first four groups. This paper is concerned with congenital cystic disease of the lung of the adenomatoid malformation type, Stowen's group IV, which was first reported in the American literature by Ch'in and Tang\* in 1949. Ten cases were reported in a review of the literature plus one of their own. These authors stated that
