Neonatal jaundice occurs due to increased bilirubin production and decreased conjugation in newborns. Physiologically, bilirubin is produced from the breakdown of hemoglobin and transported to the liver where it is conjugated and excreted. In newborns, production is higher due to fetal hypoxia and transition to extrauterine life while conjugation is lower due to immature liver enzymes.
