Despite Korea's significant role in the development of Japanese culture, ethnic animosity characterizes relations between the over 600,000 Korean citizens of Japan and native Japanese and is reinforced by legal and economic inequalities. The Japanese mythos of unitary origin, emphasizing ethnic uniqueness and homogeneity, and the exclusivity of Japanese social organization, constitute special barriers to ethnic equality. Koreans in Japan examines the persistence of complex mechanisms of discrimination in country that has become, in many ways, a model of democracy and economic efficiency. The hostility encountered by Koreans living in modern Japan has its origin in the repeated attempts at colonization of Korea by Japan, most brutally in the sixteenth-century campaign waged by the samurai Hideyoshi and most recently in the humiliating period of annexation that ended only after World War II. Following a detailed description of the long history of Korean-Japanese exchange and conflict, the authors turn to contemporary issues, describing the current legal status f Koreans and he distinctive Korean political and educational institutions that have resulted from quasi-apartheid policies.
