What is Trial of the Sow of Falaise about?

In 1386 in Falaise, France, a sow was put on trial for killing and eating a human baby. The trial involved dressing the sow and reading its rights, as animals were believed to have souls at the time. Though a serious event, it was also seen as absurd later on. The trial reflected the medieval view that the boundary between humans and animals was blurred, and that animals deserved rights, whereas the growing humanist philosophy emphasized human exceptionalism.
