This study found that: 1) Activation of GABA receptors (GABAARs) in adult neural stem cells (NSCs) in the subventricular zone (SVZ) leads to phosphorylation of the histone variant H2AX, which limits proliferation of the NSCs. 2) Genetically deleting H2AX abolishes the proliferation-restricting effect of GABAAR signaling in NSCs. 3) Acute activation of GABAARs in vivo increases H2AX phosphorylation specifically in cells of the SVZ niche, including NSCs and neuroblasts.
