The theoretical model she crafts draws upon a breathtaking array of medieval primary sources and modern frameworks, moving back and forth from such diverse sources as Ibn al-ʿArabi, Oleg Grabar, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ibn al-Haytam, Rosalind Krauss, and contemporary scholars of the mind and materiality. At times, the richness of sources and diversity of objects can give the reader a sense of intellectual whiplash, as she moves between cultural contexts, theoretical models, and object types. However, the reader is rewarded by profound and innovative meditations on the nature of the medieval object, literary tradition, and the historiography of Islamic art and art history broadly.
