This study investigates the correlation between postoperative acidosis and renal ammonium excretion in cardiac patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Out of 25 patients, 13 developed acidosis post-surgery, with findings indicating that respiratory acidosis was more likely to lead to a subsequent base excess increase compared to metabolic acidosis. The results suggest that the origin of acidosis significantly influences renal compensation mechanisms, particularly ammonium excretion.
