Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was an 18th century French composer, violinist, and conductor born of a Black enslaved mother and white plantation owner father in the French colony of Guadeloupe. He received an elite education in France and became a skilled fencer, violinist, and conductor. As a mixed-race man in 18th century France, Saint-Georges faced racism and classism that prevented him from achieving the highest levels of success, but he was admired by French royalty and other composers.
